Stephanie Reynolds at BOARD OF DIRECTORS: A Tragedy of Minor Proportions April 2- Apr 12, 2009

Opening Reception: Friday, April 3rd, 2009, 6-9 pm
1080 Queen St. W.

A Tragedy of Minor Proportions features the work of Montreal-based artist Stephanie Reynolds, who will be receiving her MFA degree from York University this spring. The watercolour and ink paintings in this exhibition are the product of two years of searching for ways to represent an event which resists representation. Approaching the subject obliquely rather than head on, the resulting painted images act as stand-ins for aspects of the event, suggesting sensations rather than directly illustrating. The paintings function as fragments that can be pieced together by the viewer to form a loose and open-ended narrative, and suggest a difficult yet common story. Touching its edges but never directly revealing it, they create fragile walls that enclose an inaccessible memory.
